On the latest AAP Podcast, portfolio managers Bob Lang and Chris Versace cover quite a bit of ground since the last episode. Out of the gate, the duo discusses the National Retail Federation’s (NRF) 2022 holiday shopping forecast and why it could prove to be a bit too optimistic. The portfolio managers will be leaning heavily into quarterly earnings from retailers to check that NRF forecast as well as where retailers stand with inventories. Even before the September quarter earnings season began, Bob and Chris thought consensus S&P 500 EPS expectations would need to come down, and they have started to do just that. Now for those retail earnings and the concern they have is for margins given markdowns and sales to blow through that inventory before reloading for the 2022 holiday shopping season. They see further downward EPS revisions ahead for the S&P 500.

Chris shares why he thinks there is more room to go in those downward revisions for 2022 and 2023 even though Goldman Sachs (GS) just slashed its 2023 EPS growth rate for the S&P 500 to zero. Bob takes us through the current divergence in the market and does a quick tutorial on volatility, including why we’re likely to see the VIX fall as we approach the end of 2022. He also touches on the mid-term elections, and it being just a few days after the Fed’s November meeting that shocked markets, the two share what they expect ahead of the Fed’s December monetary policy meeting and the Fed Funds rate. Next up is the September Consumer Price Index, and Bob walks us through the Cleveland Fed’s Inflation Nowcasting model.

Near the end of the podcast, Bob shares the one thing he’ll be focused on this week, and the stock he’ll be watching the most in the coming days. Chris does the same, and here’s a clue as to what stock he’ll be watching – it’s the home of the crab chip. But as to why he’s focused on that stock, you’ll have to listen to this episode of the AAP podcast.
